Dr. Amy Athey

Wellness & Performance Leader l Performance Psychologist l Author

Dr. Athey is a licensed psychologist and national leader in sport and performance psychology, crisis intervention, and developing nontraditional mental health and wellness programs for organizations.


She has over 20 years experience working with elite performers in sport, business, higher education, and the military. As Chief Wellness Officer at the University of Arizona, she developed and deployed a campus-wide peer psychological first aid program in response to the COVID pandemic. Over her career, she has also consulted with NCAA Champions, professional athletes, Olympians, C-Level executives, U.S. Special Forces and was the sport psychology consultant for the 2012 Rose Bowl Championship football team.


As a leader, she served as Chair of the PAC-12 inaugural Mental Health Task Force and drafted and motioned to the floor the first-ever NCAA Mental Health Legislation, which was unanimously approved. She co-developed "REST: Recovery Enhancement and Sleep Training," a sleep wellness program funded by the NCAA. A a subject matter expert in sleep and performance, she is co-editor of "Sleep and Sport," a text to be released by Elsevier in 2022. Dr. Athey also served on the NCAA Sleep and Wellness Task Force. Dr. Athey also is co-author of "Leading Beyond Crisis: The Five Pillars of Transformative Resilient Leadership," to be released by the American Psychological Association in 2022.


Dr. Athey earned a doctorate degree from Loyola University in Maryland and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Roanoke College, where she was an All-American basketball player and inducted in the Roanoke College Athletics Hall of Fame.


Dr. Athey currently serves on the Human Performance Team for the US Naval Special Warfare Development Group. She also is Co-Founder of Masterchats, a tech startup that democratizes coaching and wellness services.
